Plan before the last minute

Air plant vacation care is mostly preparation. Do not discover the morning you leave that the plant is wet, hidden in glass, or sitting in a dark corner.

Water and dry before leaving

If the plant needs water, soak or rinse it a day before travel, then dry it completely. Leaving a wet plant in a holder is riskier than leaving a healthy plant slightly dry for a short trip.

Choose the right location

Use bright indirect light, open airflow, and a stable room temperature. Avoid hot windows, cold drafts, closed terrariums, and damp bathrooms while you are gone.

Short trips

For a long weekend or several days, healthy air plants often do fine after normal watering and drying. Do not overwater just because you feel nervous.

Longer trips

For longer travel, ask someone to mist or rinse only if they can also let the plant dry. A simple written routine is safer than complicated instructions.

Displays to avoid

Remove plants from sealed globes, shells that hold water, and damp moss before leaving. Open holders are easier and safer during travel.

When you return

Inspect the base first, then water if the plant is dry and firm. If it is soft, dark, or damp, improve airflow before adding more water.

Vacation mistakes

The biggest mistake is soaking heavily and returning the plant to a tight display right before leaving. Drying is the step that protects the plant while nobody is watching.
